Spadra, California is a small, unincorporated community located in Los Angeles County. Formerly a bustling town, Spadra’s history dates back to the early 1800s when it was founded as a farming community. The town’s name originates from the Spanish word “espadra,” meaning a type of long spear or pike, which was often used by Spanish soldiers and settlers.
In its early days, Spadra was an important stop along the Old Spanish Trail, a trade route that connected Santa Fe, New Mexico with Los Angeles. The town’s location made it a hub for trade and commerce, and it quickly grew in population and prosperity. By the mid-1800s, Spadra had become a thriving agricultural community, known for its vineyards, citrus orchards, and wheat fields. The arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in the late 1800s further fueled the town’s growth and economic development.
However, the fortunes of Spadra began to decline in the early 20th century. The construction of the nearby Pomona Freeway (State Route 71) and changes in agricultural practices led to a decline in the town’s prominence. Today, Spadra is a shadow of its former self, with a small population and a few remaining historic buildings. The town’s rich history is still evident in its architecture and landmarks, including the Spadra Cemetery, which dates back to the 19th century. The cemetery is the final resting place of many of the town’s early settlers and pioneers, providing a glimpse into Spadra’s past.
Despite its diminished stature, Spadra’s charm lies in its quiet, rural atmosphere and its connections to the past.
