Rigby is perhaps best known as the birthplace of television. In 1922, a 14-year-old farm boy named Philo Farnsworth had the idea for a completely electronic television system while plowing a field. He later developed and patented his invention, and the first-ever TV transmission took place in Rigby in 1927. Today, the town is proud of its connection to the history of television and celebrates this accomplishment with the Farnsworth Festival, an annual event that honors the town’s most famous resident.
In addition to its historical significance, Rigby offers residents and visitors a wide range of outdoor recreational activities. The town is located near several natural attractions, including the Snake River, which provides opportunities for fishing, boating, and other water sports. The surrounding area also offers hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing in the nearby Targhee National Forest and Yellowstone National Park.
