Ohkay Owingeh, formerly known as San Juan Pueblo, is a Native American Pueblo located in the Rio Grande Valley in northern New Mexico. It is one of the 8 northern Pueblos in the state and has a rich history that dates back over 700 years. The name “Ohkay Owingeh” means “Place of the Strong People” in the Tewa language.

The pueblo is situated along the Rio Grande River, which has provided the community with a source of water for irrigation and sustenance for centuries. The land surrounding the pueblo is fertile and has been used for agriculture by the Ohkay Owingeh people for generations. Corn, beans, and squash are among the traditional crops grown by the community.

The pueblo has also made efforts to preserve its cultural heritage and promote economic development through the revitalization of traditional crafts such as pottery and jewelry making. The Owe’neh Bupingeh Preservation Project has worked to restore and renovate the historic adobe buildings in the pueblo, providing housing and community spaces while preserving the traditional architecture.

In recent years, the pueblo has worked to promote ecotourism and sustainable agriculture initiatives to support the local economy and preserve the natural environment.
