Nashwauk is a small town located in Itasca County in the state of Minnesota. With a population of just over 900 people, it has a close-knit community feel and a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century.

The town was founded when the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway was extended to the area in 1893. Its name, Nashwauk, is derived from the Ojibwe word for “twins” or “two,” which is fitting as the town is situated near the fork of the two rivers, the Mississippi and the Swan. This picturesque setting has made Nashwauk an attractive destination for outdoor enthusiasts, with opportunities for fishing, hunting, and hiking in the surrounding natural beauty.

Nashwauk was established as an iron ore mining town, and this industry has remained an integral part of the town’s economy throughout its history. The Hull-Rust-Mahoning Open Pit Iron Mine, one of the largest open-pit mines in the world, is located just outside the town and has been a major employer for Nashwauk residents for decades.

The town is home to the historic Memorial Arena, which has served as the training ground for many aspiring hockey players over the years. The arena’s teams have achieved great success in local and state competitions, and the community takes great pride in its hockey tradition.
