K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base is a former United States Air Force base located in Michigan, in the Upper Peninsula. The base was named after Kenneth Ingalls Sawyer, a former Marquette County resident who became a pilot during World War II and was ultimately killed in action in 1944. The base was initially established in the 1940s and was used primarily for Strategic Air Command (SAC) operations during the Cold War.

The base played a significant role in the defense of the United States during the Cold War, serving as a key component in the nation’s nuclear deterrent strategy. It was home to several bomber squadrons equipped with B-52 Stratofortress aircraft, which were capable of carrying nuclear weapons. The base also housed a variety of support units, including reconnaissance aircraft and tanker aircraft, which were instrumental in ensuring the readiness and effectiveness of the SAC forces.

In addition to its military operations, K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base was also a significant economic and social force in the surrounding area. The base provided employment opportunities for local residents and contributed to the local economy through its purchasing and contracting activities. It also supported a vibrant community of military personnel and their families, who made significant contributions to the local culture and social fabric.

However, in the early 1990s, following the end of the Cold War, the base was identified for closure as part of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process. In 1995, the Air Force officially closed the base and transferred its facilities to the local community. Since then, the former base has been redeveloped for commercial and industrial use, with efforts to attract new businesses and industries to the area.

Today, K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base is a key part of the economic landscape of the Upper Peninsula, providing opportunities for growth and development in the region. The legacy of the base lives on in the memories of those who served there, and its impact continues to be felt in the community it called home for so many years.
