Grissom Air Force Base is a military installation located in Miami County, Indiana. The base is named after astronaut and test pilot Lieutenant Colonel Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom, who was one of the original seven Mercury astronauts and was killed in a tragic accident during a pre-launch test for the Apollo 1 mission in 1967. Grissom Air Force Base was originally established as a naval aviation base in 1942 during World War II, known as Naval Air Station Bunker Hill. It was later transferred to the United States Air Force and renamed Grissom Air Force Base in 1968 in honor of Gus Grissom.
The base is home to the 434th Air Refueling Wing, which operates the KC-135R Stratotanker, a military aerial refueling aircraft, and provides air refueling support to U.S. and allied military aircraft worldwide.
