Eielson Air Force Base is located approximately 26 miles south of Fairbanks, Alaska, and is home to the United States Air Force’s 354th Fighter Wing. The base has a long and storied history, dating back to its establishment in 1944 during World War II. Originally named Mile 26, the base was later renamed Eielson Air Force Base in honor of Carl Ben Eielson, a pioneering aviator and explorer who died in a plane crash in 1929.

Eielson Air Force Base is known for its strategic location, which allows it to support and conduct operations in the Indo-Pacific region. The base is home to a significant number of F-35A Lightning II and F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter aircraft, which are critical for air superiority and combat capabilities. In addition to its combat mission, Eielson Air Force Base also supports various other missions, including intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), as well as search and rescue operations in the vast and rugged Alaskan wilderness.

The base is also home to the 168th Wing of the Alaska Air National Guard, which operates C-17 Globemaster III and KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft. These units play a vital role in providing airlift and aerial refueling support to military operations around the world.

Eielson Air Force Base is also known for its harsh and unforgiving Arctic climate, which offers unique challenges and opportunities for training and readiness. The base’s proximity to the Arctic Circle provides a critical training environment for aircrews and support personnel, allowing them to hone their skills in extreme cold weather conditions and austere environments.

In addition to its military mission, Eielson Air Force Base is also an integral part of the local community. The base provides numerous jobs and economic opportunities for the surrounding area, and its personnel are actively involved in various community outreach programs and events. Overall, Eielson Air Force Base plays a crucial role in defending the nation’s interests and projecting power in the Indo-Pacific region while also serving as a valuable partner to the local community in Alaska.
