Crownsville is a small unincorporated community located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Situated in the central part of the state, Crownsville is primarily known for its beautiful natural surroundings and the historic Crownsville Hospital Center.
The community is named after the Crownsville Hospital Center, which was originally established as the Hospital for the Negro Insane of Maryland in 1911. The hospital played a crucial role in providing care and treatment for African American patients with mental illnesses during a time when segregation laws were prevalent. Over the years, the hospital expanded and its name was changed to the Crownsville State Hospital. However, due to changes in mental health care practices, the hospital officially closed its doors in 2004.
Today, the Crownsville Hospital Center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and efforts are being made to preserve the historic buildings and grounds. The hospital’s history and its role in mental health care continue to be an important part of Crownsville’s identity.
